American Wilderness Leadership School
SEVEN 2008 SPONSORSHIPS AWARDED for
AWLS
The SCI NEWI Chapter and SCI NEWI
Sables
have
awarded seven (7) sponsorships to teachers/educators and students to
attend one of the American Wilderness Leadership School workshops at
Granite Creek Ranch located 33 miles southeast of Jackson, Wyoming
in the summer of 2008. The site consists of the Joe Loveridge—Jim
Conklin Education Complex and is surrounded by the marvelous beauty
of the Gros Ventre Wilderness area within Bridger-Teton National
Forest.
Each of the nine
sponsorships pays the $800.00 registration fee for the
weeklong workshop. This includes room, board, linens and
towels with pick up and return to the airport at Jackson
Hole—if they arrive by commercial airline. Other travel
costs to and from are each individual’s responsibility.
The SCI NEWI Chapter and the SCI
NEWI Sables believe in the AWLS program. The future of hunting
depends on presenting the facts about conservation, sustainable use
of our resources and the part hunters’ play in this vital part of
our future. Enlightening teachers/educators enables them to share
this information with their students which in turn impacts the
future. And, what better way to prepare future generations than by
exposing 15-18 year old students who already have an interest in
environmental issues to the same factual information.
The
program content consists of academic lectures, discussions and field
trips covering Rocky Mountain wildlife, wildlife ecology,
environmental ethics, natural resource management and conservation,
environmental leadership, wildlife management and firearm use and
safety.
There are seven (7)
teachers/educators who received 2008 AWLS sponsorships. Elisabeth
Porior, Roberta Windus, D.J. Huddleston, Travis Moore, Jeremy
Traynor, Lars Long and Scott Resch. We find them teaching science,
special ed/disabled, environmental science, technology, physical ed
and at the elementary level. Here are some brief reasons why these
teachers/educators want to experience AWLS:
It is with great pleasure that
the NE WI SCI Chapter and NE WI Sables support the AWLS program and
a privilege to sponsor these seven (7) individuals for a 2008 AWLS
workshop. The impact this experience will have on them and on future
generations is gratifying. We wish them a delightful and rewarding
learning and life-enriching endeavor.
